Abhishek Adhikary
Pandit Abhishek Adhikary is an Europe, Portugal based traditional North Indian Classical musician, Sitarist, composer and music educator. He is grand disciple of Bharat Ratna Pandit Ravi Shankar. Abhishek has taken his rigorous musical training from his Gurus Pandit Deepak Chowdhury and Prof. Sukumar Chandra. Abhishek belongs to Senia Rampur - Maihar Gharana. He has also learnt the style of Senia Jaipur from Padma Bhushan Pandit Debu Chaudhuri. From his family lineage, he belongs to the eighth generation in music. Pandit Abhishek is a great grandson of Ustad Bhagabandas Sitari of Dhaka, famous Surbahar, Rudra Veena and Sitar player of his era and descendant of Pandit Haricharadas Swami of Varanasi, India.
Sitar maestro Abhishek Adhikary has performed over five hundred concerts and major festivals, in various television shows and live concerts in India and abroad. He has shared his performances with many distinguished legendary musicians of Indian Classical Music in the same platforms. Abhishek's performance reflects the traditional Dhrupad Ang Veenkar style. He always maintains the purity of the Indian melody called Raga. His soulful Alap and Vistar (Traditinal solo part slowly unfolding the Swaras of the Raga melody) and the heart touching Meends, scintillating speed in Taankari ( ornamentation and permutation and combination of musical notes), Style of Layakari and high speed Jhala ( Conclusion of the performance with high tempo ) in different Taals( Indian rhythmic circles of time with specific sellebels of Tabla and Pakhawaj) create an aesthetic divine appeal among the listeners. Though Abhishek mainly plays the Tantrakari ang but he assimilates the Gayaki ang too in his performance. His style of playing reflects spiritualism with dexterity. He has served the society not just through his music performances but also through teaching and spreading Hindustani Classical Music to many students in different institutes and personal pupils in India and other countries.
He has received many prestigious awards and Titles from various Institutes, University and Government of India. 'Surashri' title from Patna, 'Surmani' award from Mumbai, Pandit Nikhil Banerjee and Nirod Baran Memorial Prizes from Rabindra Bharati University, National Scholarship from Government of India are a few amongst them. Abhishek is a Master's in Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata India. He is also Sangeet Prabhakar from Prayag Sangit Samiti, Allahabad India. He has completed his Ph.D. course by UGC from Rabindra Bharati University. Presently he is working as a Sitar and Hindustani Music educator as well as Rubab and Sarode teacher in advance level students at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music which is presently based in Braga Portugal, Europe. The institute has been re-established in Portugal to keep alive the music tradition, education rights and equal gender rights after Taliban's return in Afghanistan in 2021. Before moving to Europe he worked as Sitar and Sarod Faculty in the same institute educating Afghan musicians and young boys and girls in Kabul, Afghanistan, the war torn country, from 2012 to the end of 2019.
